UKBC
UK Biology Competitions (UKBC) is the name of a 'Special Interest Group' which formed within the Society of Biology in March 2010. This group of volunteers will be responsible for running the British Biology Olympiad and Biology Challenge.
The Society of Biology
The Society of Biology is a single unified voice for biology: advising Government and influencing policy; advancing education and professional development; supporting members, and engaging and encouraging public interest in the life sciences.
The Society was created in October 2010 by the unification of the Biosciences Federation and the Institute of Biology, building on the heritage and reputation of these two organisations to champion the study and development of biology, and provide expert guidance and opinion.
BBSRC backs UK team at 2010 International Biology Olympiad
The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the UK's principal public funder of bioscience research and training, has announced that it is sponsoring the UK team for the 2010 International Biology Olympiad which will take place in South Korea. The Olympiad is a prestigious international competition to find the most talented young biology students.
The British Biology Olympiad aims to stimulate and challenge thousands of aspiring young scientists in Year 12 and Year 13. Entrants will take part in three rounds comprising both theory and practical examinations, which begin in January 2010. From these a team will be selected to represent the UK at the International Biology Olympiad.
BBSRC is also supporting the Biology Challenge - the national competition for Year 9 and Year 10 students aimed at encouraging pupils to maintain an interest in biology during and after their GSCEs.
